Introduction
Adopting the principles of savings and credit operations, with the main objective of bringing about certain economic changes within our society by ourselves, after Nepal’s historic People’s Movement of 1990 (2046 B.S.), inspired by the political change and enthusiasm, 13 local youths from Banepa Dachhu Tole collectively established the institution on Ashadh 2, 2047 B.S. (June 16, 1990) under the name Chandeshwori Forum in Banepa, with the technical advice and suggestions of Friends Forum Kathmandu. At the beginning, only a few individuals who were dedicated to establishing it contributed monthly savings and shares, starting the institution’s financial transactions with just Rs. 1,300 (in words, one thousand three hundred rupees) in capital. In this way, the accumulated monthly savings were invested as loans among the members of the institution according to rotation, and rules and regulations were formulated to guide the financial activities. Alongside, collective efforts were made to resist various social distortions and malpractices, and different social programs were also initiated. Although the cooperative movement had already begun in Nepal, it had not yet been brought to the general public in a simple and accessible way. For the first three years since its establishment, the institution operated strictly under the principles of savings and credit. However, after the enactment of Nepal’s Cooperative Act, 2048 B.S. (1991) and Cooperative Regulations, 2049 B.S. (1992), the institution also agreed to operate under these legal provisions. On Ashwin 6, 2050 B.S. (September 22, 1993), it was officially registered at the District Cooperative Office, Kavrepalanchok, with the jurisdiction covering the entire district. Since then, the institution has been successfully operating by adhering to the principles, policies, and regulations of savings and credit cooperatives.
